Old Times / New Times

At the Digital Technology & Heritage Conference at the University of Bath we were delighted to discover that the Oakfield Campus in Swindon is the home of the Museum of Computing.

This has only been going since February 2003 and has many gems including this Research Machines 380Z.

A sense of nostalgia came over us as we fondled the rubbery keys of the long forgotten Sinclair Spectrum.

Flipping Pages

I have seen recently a demo of the British Library ‘Turning Pages’ system for displaying books. Go to their web site and take a look here.  There seems to be this trend for making the sense of turning the page of an electronic book as realistic as possible and I thought I would take a look round and review the scene.

Online Tradeshow Trophies

I gathered an enormous collection of trade show trinkets at the Online-Information show in London yesterday.

I was amazed at the amount of merchandising that goes on for these trade shows. I do wish that they would give away tee-shirts rather than this assortment of sweets, pens and squeezy balls.

Authoring Tools

In the days when Hypercard was the only authoring tool around, we got used to the idea of presenting information ‘one screen at a time’. Hypercard, like other authoring tools that followed needed a metaphor to help us think of screens of information.  Hypercard used the card metaphor. A bunch of cards was called a stack. So we thought in terms of a pile of cards and we presented them one after the other.
