Brazil

Sometimes referred to as 'Brasil', Hy-Brasil', or 'O'Brasil' this island was mentioned in various early Irish literature. The island was 'known' to Bristol seamen before 1497 and can be found on charts and maps until 1850 when, on the British Admiralty chart it was depicted as 'Brasil Rock'.

Jura

One of the Inner Hebridean Islands

George Orwell wrote 1984 here. Between Jura and Scarba, at the north end is the famous wirpool Gulf of Corryvreken.

The Summer Isles

Tanera Mor is the largest of the group. This island is where Frank Fraser Darling renovated the farm and wrote of his experiences in Island Farm (1940)

St Kilda

The furthest west Hebridean island in the Atlantic. Evacuated in 1930.

There are several islands in the archipelago, Hirta, the main island is the only island to have had a permanent population. The islands are now owned by the national Trust for Scotland.
