Can anyone own “Web 2.0?”

Cory Doctorow: O’Reilly Media have taken a ton of criticism for attempting to enforce a service mark against a nonprofit group in Ireland that wanted to have "Web 2.0" conference. O’Reilly exec Dale Dougherty coined the term Web 2.0, and O’Reilly used it for a line of very successful conferences chaired by Boing Boing’s business manager, John Battelle (I’ve been a speaker at Web 2.0 as well, and found the con to be an amazing, eye-opening experience).  Link

Pandora, Music you like

Steve Borsch (Connecting the Dots) posted this up on his web site, so that’s how I found it.

Pandora builds a radio station for you, based on your favorite music. Brilliant Flash web application. You start by typing in the name of a song or artist. The song is compared against a selection of similar songs and they begin to play. You then sharpen up your taste indicators by saying if you like or dislike this song. Gradually, a radio station is made for you.

Unfortunately, you can find yourself not liking too many of the choices and then the license agreement, that the project has arranged limits the number of ‘rejections’.

Go on - try it

The Principles of Design

An excellent article over at Digital Web Magazine:

The Principles of Design by Joshua David McClurg-Genevese. This was published back in June 2005 but was pointed out to me by Chris Gibbins

The article covers all basic considerations and I will certainly point this out to my students.

I have written a few pieces about design so I have now created a new category for this topic so they all go in there from now on.
