Amsterdam is the ‘World Book Capital’ for 2008

Amsterdam has been chosen to be the World Book Capital in 2008.

A selection committee, comprised of representatives of UNESCO and the three main international organizations representing the book industry chose Amsterdam because of its large range of activities relating to books and reading.

So there is more to Amsterdam than tulips and Rembrandt.

There are 30 initiatives in Amsterdam,...

a number of them with international scope, focusing on different aspects of publishing. It includes forums on copyright, scientific publication, intercultural aspects of literary creation and children’s books; the opening of new libraries and cultural centres; and several seminars and creative events, such as a costume parade on the theme of heroes in literature for young people. - UNESCO press release.

The World Book Capital is an idea that has been running since 2001 and WikiPedia has a list of the holders of the award.

The Unesco web site, has all the details of this year's award although it would be good if I could find something about it from the Netherlands.
