An Electrical Hum

image

Everything hums. Aren’t you sick of the ever present throbbing from everything electrical?

I clean my teeth in the morning with my electrical toothbrush and I feel good because my dentist tells me this is the way to do it. But I don’t like my head vibrating as the little motor drives the brizzles around my molars!

The worst of it is that the cheapest computers that we have in the department make deafening unsynchronised humming from their cooling fans.

When I place a CD in the drive of my Apple laptop, the sound is similar to the one heard from our vacuum cleaner.

furthermore...

Are things getting better? Maybe. Only because as we get older our hearing reduces in sensitivity and because we become used to these humming intrusions. When we move to strange locations, that's when we notice it. Homes make noises and we get used to them. Our heating and our refrigerator send out vibrations and we notice this in the still of the evening. Do our visitors notice this more than us? Of course. We haven't been away from noise for a while now. A real wilderness where nothing hums. No road noise, no engines, no jet planes passing overhead. No police helicoptors, chasing down the criminals in the night. No computers. No I can still hear it: Maybe it's the hum of changing opinion ......
